Name: Julia Spence
Position: Headmistress
Age: 43
Gender: Female
Power:
Julia is an omni-linguist, meaning she can understand various languages without having to study it. This is obviously an unhelpful skill, because while she can understand everything as if it was spoken in English, speaking the language is a completely different story. Only a very few languages she can actually speak, and this is because she has studied rigorously her entire life to perfect her ability. Among the languages she was born to both understand and speak was Latin, Greek, and French. And, even then, her accent was imperfect. Julia has spent years perfecting her skill, and has thus nearly mastered every language. She still comes by many of which she can not speak, or even understand clearly.
Physical Description:
Julia stands at 5'3". Her square jaw is punctuated by her shoulder-length, wavy brown hair. Her large eyes are shadowed by her slightly bushy, yet elegantly arched, eyebrows and are the color of grass right after a good rainfall. She has a straight, patrician nose. Her mouth is usually pressed into a firm line. However, sometimes, students can see the corners of her lips pull upward into a sad little smile at their antics.
A student can usually see her walking the halls of her school wearing a suit of brown dress pants and elegant top with a ruffly front. Julia is imposing and never slouches. She has a straight back, leveled shoulders, and holds her chin up in pride. Her bony hands are usually delicately manicured.
Personality:
Julia Spence is all the sharpness her appearance makes her seem. Her eyes miss nothing, and her wisdom seems to know no bounds. She is strict to those who require a firm hand, and understanding to those who are too confused to see the right path. She feels that her Code is as true as any law the States has to pass, and honestly feels that everything she's trying to convey to her students -- that the gifts they have received are a blessing, not a curse -- is the truth.
One of her failings is that Julia refuses to quit. She is terrified to lose hope in a student and feels that it is her duty as an experienced adult to help those younger than her. She doesn't understand that some can't be helped, or don't want help -- even if they are at her school.
She is forever plagued with the guilt and despair of losing her only child. She feels that she failed her daughter, and has convinced herself that the only way she can ever make up for the wrong is to make multiple rights. She must help her students. It is not only her mission, but it has become her destiny.
History:
Julia was born in 1966 -- the year that the Sound of Music won Best Picture in the Academy Awards, the year Walt Disney died...the year that a biochemist named Har Khorna finished deciphering the DNA code -- and immediately handed off to her adoptive parents.
She was a completely normal baby -- if not just a little chubby, but perfectly loved. Dr. and Mrs. Garrett were well-respected in the community, and well-known for their compassion towards others no matter their situation. Julia was to be raised the perfect daughter to fit their perfect image. The Garretts were confused, then, when Julia's first words were spoken in Latin. And then, after a few days, reverted to English. It was all strange, but this weirdness didn't occur for several more years.
When she was thirteen, Julia bumped into a lost tourist -- a Greek man and his daughter. To her astonishment, she could understand every word that passed through the father's chapped and beard-covered lips. They were lost, and were looking for their hotel. Julia tried to convey to them where they should head, but realized that they could not understand her English. The Greek man and his daughter continued their onslaught of anxiety until finally, Julia threw back her head and demanded, "Kamonomai!!"
Both Greeks immediately quieted, in awe at her sudden knowledge of their language as she then continued to explain how to reach their hotel.
In nearly perfect Greek.
Julia was so anxious afterward that she raced home and told both parents everything. She had always wondered why she had mastered French so quickly in school. Her parents told her that her first words had been in Latin as a baby, and Julia realized that perhaps this was not just a random talent. Perhaps -- maybe, if she hoped -- it was a gift.
Julia spent years refining her talent. By the age of 24 -- in 1990 -- she was nearly fluent in Spanish, German, and had begun her studies in Chinese. That was when she met her future husband. He was a gentleman, a charmer, and was like her. David could read minds as clearly as if they were speaking aloud. It was an amazing gift -- one that Julia envied every day of their marriage.
When Julia was 30, she gave birth to a tiny baby girl with bright blue eyes and gorgeous blond curls. Meredith. She was their pride and joy. She was kind, sincere, truthful...a perfect daughter. And Meredith was as gifted as her parents -- perhaps even more so. Her gift was both terrifying and wonderful.
Meredith could communicate the dead.
She was a strange girl, really. She was alienated by her peers, and brutally bullied for the different way she acted -- reserved, quiet, nodding and seeming to have conversation with someone who was not there.
David had been aware of the beatings, and had approached Meredith and her teacher about it. But the teacher, like Meredith, refused to acknowledge the beatings and David was forced to let it go -- but only after he forced Meredith to tell him if the beatings continued.
Meredith never said a word, and on her twelfth birthday, Meredith never came home from school. Her body was found days later.
David turned against Julia, blamed her for everything. And Julia blamed herself, as well. She had been blind to the warning signs, and now her precious little girl was gone. A few months later, David left her. A year after that -- after hearing many more horror stories akin to Meredith's -- Julia opened her Academy.
Sample Post:
The click-clacking of Julia's heels were the only sound echoing down the otherwise quiet, dim-lit hallway. Today would be the day that the school finally opened to the young public. It would be a sanctuary -- one that she hadn't been able to give Meredith, but owed the other children.
She had sent out letters with the help of an old friend. He was gifted with an ability to find others like themselves, anywhere in the world. She had asked for his help, and he had accepted under the condition that he remain anonymous.
The first few students were bound to come forth soon. She was expecting a knock on the door at any moment, really. Any moment...
Julia's clacking heels stopped as her sharp gaze turned to the old, rusted mirror against the alabaster wall. Her reflection stared back -- sad and defeated. Except she wasn't...not anymore. She wouldn't allow such petty emotions. Meredith would not have wanted that. It was 2009. Only a year ago Meredith had died. It was hard to believe. All that hard work...
A knock came at the large door. Julia turned her attention and felt her hand wrap around the handle, and as she pulled back the door, she greeted her first student.
"Welcome, to Dark Forest Academy."
